Frequently Asked Questions
1. What can I do with a Broker License that I cannot do with a Sales License?
As a licensed Broker, you have the legal authority to open your own real estate firm, manage your own office, and hire sales agents to work under you. You can also work as an independent broker without being “hung” under another firm, allowing you to keep 100% of your commissions rather than splitting them with a traditional office.
2. Does having a Broker License help with commercial or luxury listings?
Yes. In the high-end and commercial markets, having “Broker” on your business card signals a higher level of expertise and commitment to the industry. Because the state requires more experience and a higher passing score (75%) for Brokers, clients often perceive you as a more qualified expert.
3. Is the Broker Exam much harder than the Sales Agent Exam?
The exam covers similar topics but requires a deeper understanding of management, trust fund accounting, and legal liabilities. While a Sales Agent needs a 70% to pass, the DRE requires Brokers to reach a 75% passing score. Our PowerPrep system is specifically tuned to this higher standard.
4. How long do I have to complete my 8 courses and sit for the exam?
Per DRE regulations, each course takes 18 days to complete, meaning you can finish the education in 144 days (approx. 4.8 months) or sooner if less courses are needed. Once finished, your certificates are valid for the state exam application. We recommend testing as soon as possible while the material is fresh.
5. If I have a 4-year degree, do I still need the 2 years of sales experience?
The DRE allows a major or minor in Real Estate from an accredited 4-year college to count as “equivalent experience”. This often allows college graduates to “fast-track” directly to the Broker exam without waiting the full two years as a sales agent.
